Sea Moss...Is it the real deal?

Finding the right Sea Moss can be confusing, Depending on where in the world it’s harvested it is called by many different names. It is most commonly referred to as Genus Gracilaria. However, regardless of the name tag, Visually Identifying as a whole the real (Wild Crafted) Sea Moss from the Fake (Pool Farmed) Sea Moss is what’s most important.

Real naturally harvested sea moss comes in a few different shades ranging in tones of gold, dark tan, or purple. When dehydrated, stems are thin and the light coating of natural salt from the sea is barely noticeable. When prepared to make sea moss gel it can swell up to 3 times its size. However even in a hydrated state it is still relatively thin.

Fake (Pool farmed) Sea Moss can be found in the same shades as mentioned above but in an exact tone with no range. The most giving characteristics in contrast are the thick stems and the excessive amount of grain salt coated from the salt brine used at the farms. Farmed Sea Moss even when in the dehydrated state will look full and abnormally thick in comparison and when soaked it will not swell noticeably more than the size it was when dehydrated.

Wild Crafted Sea moss is naturally occurring in the ocean along the rocky coasts, primarily in North America, Europe, and the Caribbean Islands. When sea moss is naturally harvested, only a part of the plant is taken by the harvesters. This allows the plant to regrow maintaining ecosystem balance and providing for future harvest.

Sea moss can offer up to 92 of the 102 minerals that the body is comprised of, but it must absorb these minerals through the ocean's waves as it's attached to the coastal rocks. Like how spring water gets its alkalinity and minerals rushing along the river rocks. When Sea Moss is grown on fixtures in man-made pools there is no way for it to absorb the proper amount of minerals.

Raw Wildcrafted sea moss is used to create real mineral-rich sea moss gel. Gel made from pool harvested sea moss is not as mineral-rich and with the number of unnecessary chemicals and salt added it can actually be harmful to the human body. It is important to know the difference between the two so you can make an informed purchase from a reputable supplier.
